Ever been in on a conference call? Ever had three people talk at once…. or not at all? Same thing happens with group podcasts – the way to solve this is to have a few people with mega-processing power to record the audio stream of a video conference call. That way, you still get visual clues. Or perhaps even a short running script.

Otherwise, if you limit the group to 3 people or so, it should work ok as long as everyone knows eachother and their speaking styles.

Fabulous idea though, I’d definitely listen to it.

Yeah I don’t plan on it being easy, but really wanted to give the idea a try. The “live” podcast sounds like a blast, I’d love to see that happen! I haven’t tried any of the recording stuff myself, though any program that can record your sound card’s contents (and thus a Skype conversation) I’d imagine wouldn’t be too hard to set up. My other problem is that my computer is a somewhat underpowered laptop, and Skype alone tends to shoot my processor use through the roof.

Yup, it’s a great plan, but be warned that getting contributors can be a real pain. Dave’s idea will help get submissions, especially if you select issues that give rise to strong opinions. I’d really like to see/make a “live” group podcast happen – some sort of LISNews Audio Edition. I’m picturing something like This Week in Tech, but with a bunch of us LISers chatting about the hot topics of the week. Wouldn’t that be fun? My limitation is mainly that I haven’t experimented with any of the recording technologies for VoIP, such as HotRecorder and the like. Have you?

You totally rock, Chad!!! I think that’s a fantastic idea, especially with Dave’s tweak. I agree that coming up with specific topics to let people sound off on might be a better way to get people to participate rather than having a general “call to arms.” So glad that you’re “just doing it!” If you do one on a topic you think I’d be useful for, let me know and I’d be happy to participate.

great idea!! what would you think about doing some theme shows where 3-4-5 folks give their slant on a hot library topic like wikis or chat ref or gaming or whatnot? maybe not every show but could be a cool sort of audio roundtable! i use software called audio cleaning lab to do my podcasts, just because i'm used to using it for other audio projects. audacity and lots of other programs will get the job done too.
