The Shifted Librarian mentioned the idea of a standardized API for library catalog/circulation systems.

Don’t know why I never thought of it before, but the idea is brilliant. Only problem could be getting vendors to go along with it.

While I’m on the topic, are there any good open source catalog/circulation systems? Libraries seem like a natural fit for the OS development model.

  1. I’ve added a comment to the parent post on the Shifted Librarian related to the VIEWS initiative which is working on the type of common API system for a number of information management scenarios, not just integrated library systems. With regards to open source ILS systems, probably the most mature is Koha. You can also look for other library-related open source tools as http://www.oss4lib.org

  2. Interesting, thanks much for the links
